WATCH: 12-year-old with two moms in Utah speaks out for the freedom to marry

"At school, we talked about things we'd like to see in our lifetime," 12-year-old Riley Hackford-Peer told filmmaker D'Arcy Benincosa in a new video. He explained, "I've always said that I'd like to see my parents get married."

In December, Riley, who lives in the Salt Lake City area with his two mothers, Ruth and Kim, saw that dream come true when a federal judge struck down a constitutional amendment banning same-sex couples from marrying in Utah and established the freedom to marry. Over the next 16 days, nearly 1,300 gay and lesbian couples - including Ruth and Kim, who have been together for 17 years - tied the knot in Utah. Just a few days after the ruling, Riley spoke out about his family and about why marriage matters in Utah.

The video featuring Riley and his family is a sweet depiction of a son standing up for his mothers - a refutation of marriage opponents' persistent claims (which have been rejected again and again) that same-sex couples do not make good parents. "The only influence they've really put on me," Riley said, "is that it's OK to be who you are."

Last week, the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals heard oral arguments in the Utah marriage case, Kitchen v. Herbert. This week, the same three-judge panel at the 10th Circuit will consider Bishop v. Smith out of Oklahoma. Learn more about marriage at the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals HERE

D'Arcy Benincosa, who filmed this awesome video featuring Riley, is raising money on Indie Gogo to produce a feature-length documentary about the freedom to marry across the United States. Through the film, and along the way through moving 3-4 minute video profiles of gay and lesbian couples and their families, D'Arcy is providing such beautiful insight into the people and families behind these laws. Her work is showing who is impacted by anti-gay laws - as well as the people whose lives are dramatically improved when they have the freedom to marry the person they love.
