WATCH: New Mexico family talks about why marriage matters in new TV ad

This morning, a coalition of state and national organizations in New Mexico launched a new statewide television spot featuring The Sandoval Family, headed by Daniel and Theresa Sandoval, who have been married for 51 years in Albuquerque, NM. They raised three children, including one son who is gay, and they enjoy spending time with their five grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren.

In the TV spot, which represents the broad majority support in favor of the New Mexico Supreme Court's ruling declaring the freedom to marry for same-sex couples across the state, Daniel explains, "We believe in the Golden Rule - in treating others as we want to be treated. Respect is very important to me, and it's the heart of the issue. In New Mexico, we respect every family."

The ad is supported by the Equality New Mexico Foundatino and ACLU of New Mexico Foundation. Freedom to Marry is proud to partner with these organizations - as well as the National Center for Lesbian Rights and the ACLU LGBT Project - on the television spot.

Amber Royster, executive director of Equality New Mexico, explained: "Now that the New Mexico Supreme Court has granted marriage equality, it’s important to remind our friends and neighbors that the majority of New Mexican families support the freedom to marry."

On December 19, 2013, the New Mexico Supreme Court issued a landmark decision in a lawsuit seeking clarification on laws regarding the freedom to marry in the state. The ruling affirmed what a majority of New Mexicans already know: That everyone in the state should have the freedom to marry the person they love.
