An 8-8 vote on whether to pay for domestic partnership benefits for state employees set the stage in the Wisconsin legislature for a showdown divided strictly along party lines, with Democratic Governor Jim Doyle looking like the sole chance for the measure to survive the 2007-2008 budget negotiations.[link]

After a trip 14 years ago to Thailand, where he met the man he would eventually marry, Bruce MacDonald began searching for a way — any way — for them to be together. So seven years ago, he relocated to Canada, which granted visas to both men, and they settled in Vancouver's west end. An elderly Massachusetts woman felt her opposition to gay marriage melt away after "this lovely couple" moved in next door with their children. "If they can't be married in Massachusetts, they're going to leave — and then who would help me with my lawn?" she asked, urging her state lawmaker to also change and protect gay couples' right to marry by blocking a referendum designed to abolish that right. Thanks to Rep. Ross and all the others who voted against the constitutional amendment, we can celebrate a bi-partisan victory in Massachusetts — and it is a huge victory. Families in the Bay State are stronger, more secure and better because the freedom to marry will go on. Edith Windsor keeps working the phones. But this spring, she and Spyer decided that Thea couldn't wait any longer. With the help of three of Spyer's home care attendants, the couple flew to Toronto on Memorial Day weekend. The judge who married them, Windsor told the Toronto Globe and Mail, said that "we had married for all the people who died before same-sex weddings were possible." [Link]

As the debate ended, Assemblyman Matthew J. Titone, a Staten Island Democrat who is also gay, held up his cellphone and announced that his partner had just proposed. "Now everyone's asking, 'So when's the wedding?'" Mr. Titone said yesterday, "and my response is, 'We'll have to ask Joe Bruno when it will be.'" [Link]

In Massachusetts, as in Vermont, supporters of marriage equality gained ground when they put a human face on their cause. Gay and lesbian residents told stories about the relationships that mattered to them, about family, loyalty, commitment.
