Putting gay and lesbian couples' relationships in the political arena scarcely helps anyone. It gives grandstanding pols a chance to show off, but it's hard to argue that a little tolerance of differing views on the issue threatens the American family structure. It's even harder to make a case for an unnecessary constitutional amendment. [link]

Evan Wolfson says communities in the United States would be stronger if people supported all families including the ones with LGBT citizens. "The conversation about how gay people are being unfairly treated has gotten much greater in the years, and people have understood how important it is to reach out to their neighbors and say, 'We're here, we're part of this community, and we want fair treatment for our families,'" he said.

Dolores Huerta's speech at Pullman University touched on a variety of issues — including women's roles, racism, social injustice, immigration and marriage equality. "Once we know, we have to act on our knowledge. Nothing is going to change unless we change it." Huerta said, encouraging students to take attainable steps toward change, such as calling out people who use degrading terminology, organizing in groups to support causes, and writing letters to legislators.[link]

All eyes now are on the highest courts in California, Connecticut and Maryland, where decisions on the constitutionality of marriage discrimination are likely this year. Responding to a request for a legal opinion from the commissioner of the Rhode Island Board of Governors for Higher Education, Attorney General Patrick C. Lynch said the state prohibited discrimination based on sexual orientation and did not explicitly prohibit same-sex marriage. "Rhode Island will recognize same-sex marriages lawfully performed in Massachusetts as marriages in Rhode Island," the seven-page opinion said. [link]
