THE MESSAGE

Celebrating Mother’s Voices as Mother’s Day Approaches

Last Thursday, the U.S. House passed the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2007 which includes hate crimes against people based on sexual orientation, gender, gender identity and disability.

In a press release following the successful passage of the hate crimes bill, Judy Shepard, mother of Matthew Shepard who was murdered based on his sexual orientation, and who worked tirelessly to pass this legislation, said, “I refuse to be silent…”

Mrs. Shepard speaking out shows us the power of a mother’s voice.

As Mother’s Day approaches next Sunday, engage your mothers and families; their voices are crucial to the achievement of marriage equality.

Updated: Relationship Recognition in the U.S. (HRC)

THE SPOTLIGHT: The Nation

With a record number of marriage equality measures being considered in 2007 and Oregon and New Hampshire passing legislation on the road to marriage, 10 states in our country will now have some type of relationship recognition for same-sex couples. This means nearly 30% of the American population lives in states that have marriage equality or are on the road to marriage equality.

This year’s progress, after a hard 2006, shows that the country is taking a fresh look at ending marriage discrimination. The marriage equality campaign helped to create the current climate, proving if we stick with our message through the hard times, ultimately we can move hearts and minds towards equality.
