This is just plain old unfair! Chief Warrant Officer Charlie Morgan and her wife Karen describe their situation best in the video and Freedom to Marry and SLDN explain in the press release below how Karen would not be entitled to survivor's benefits upon CW2 Morgan's death. Charlie said today:
"In 2008, I was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a double mastectomy and several rounds of chemotherapy to save my life. In 2010-declared cancer-free by my oncologist-I was deployed to Kuwait for one year in support of Operation New Dawn. I faithfully fulfilled my duty and returned home to my wife and our then-four-year-old daughter. But last September, we learned the awful truth that my cancer has returned. It is metastatic and incurable. We don't know how long I have."
Looking at Charlie-who I met at the Outserve conference-my head can't stop screaming "WHERE IS EVERYONE?" Think of that Edmund Burke quote: "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing." It is evil to let Charlie suffer and perhaps die knowing the country she served won't allow her to protect her family. Benign neglect prevails; inequality exacts another toll. Freedom to Marry and SLDN are hitting Capitol Hill to deliver 30,000 petitions calling for the Defense of Marriage Act to be struck down. There should be more petitions than that. Why isn't there a unified approach from all the national groups? Why don't we care more?
