Bipartisan Chairs of Mayors for the Freedom to Marry Applaud President Obama’s Marriage Support

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The five chairs of Mayors for the Freedom to Marry, including Independent Michael Bloomberg of New York City, Republican Jerry Sanders of San Diego and Democrats Antonio Villaraigosa of Los Angeles, Thomas Menino of Boston, Annise Parker of Houston, released the following statement today, regarding President Obama’s announcement supporting the freedom to marry:

“We applaud President Obama for taking this historic step of supporting the freedom to marry – and look forward to working with the President and others to win the freedom to marry everywhere and end federal marriage discrimination once and for all.  As mayors, we understand that the strength and health of our cities are enhanced when all families are protected and supported. We know many people in loving and committed same-sex relationships who are active participants in improving our communities and we’ve seen how important marriage has been for them and their families. ”

Mayors for the Freedom to Marry is a broad-based and nonpartisan group of mayors who believe that all people should be able to share in the love and commitment of marriage.  The effort is part of Freedom to Marry’s federal campaign to expand public support for ending marriage discrimination.

Evan Wolfson, founder and President of Freedom to Marry, said the following about the President’s announcement:

“The President’s support marks an historic turning point for the freedom to marry movement. Yet there is much left to be done.  Forty-four states continue to exclude same-sex couples from marriage and because of the federal so-called Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), the civil marriages of thousands of same-sex couples are not respected by the federal government, thus depriving families of a crucial safety-net of federal protections and responsibilities.  It is time to repeal discriminatory laws that hurt families and speed passage of freedom to marry laws throughout the country.
