New York – Santa Fe Mayor David Coss and Councilor Patti Bushee announced yesterday that they are sponsoring a resolution recognizing that marriage for same-sex couples is legal in New Mexico and urging county clerks to begin issuing licenses to gay and lesbian couples. The resolution is based on the gender-neutral language of the state marriage law and the mandate of equality in the state constitution. It also tells couples how to file suit if they are denied marriage licenses.
Thalia Zepatos, Freedom to Marry’s director of public engagement and an adviser to New Mexico groups working toward marriage, said: “At a time when all Americans are talking about why marriage matters for gay and lesbian couples, we stand behind Mayor Coss and Councilor Bushee for their forward-thinking move to bring the state closer to the equality mandated by the state constitution. It’s time to end the exclusion from marriage, and Freedom to Marry looks forward to working with Equality New Mexico and the City of Santa Fe to assure all New Mexico couples the freedom to marry.”
The resolution is to be introduced to the Council next week.
Freedom to Marry is the campaign to win marriage nationwide. We are pursuing our Roadmap to Victory by working to win the freedom to marry in more states, grow the national majority for marriage, and end federal marriage discrimination. We partner with individuals and organizations across the country to end the exclusion of same-sex couples from marriage and the protections, responsibilities, and commitment that marriage brings.
