(New York, NY, June 29, 2011) – Below is a statement from Evan Wolfson, founder and President of Freedom to Marry, on President Obama’s remarks at a press conference regarding the roles of the states and federal government on marriage:

“The President is wrong -- historically, constitutionally, politically, and morally -- when he suggests that marriage is a matter solely for the states.  States issue marriage licenses, but must do so under the Constitution's guarantees of freedom and equal protection.   It is time for the President to join the majority of Americans whose thinking and understanding, like his, have evolved, and speak up in support of the freedom to marry as a cherished personal commitment and protected constitutional right.

“Since Freedom to Marry launched its Say, 'I Do' campaign with an Open Letter to the President, nearly 115,000 Americans have added their names, calling for clarity, authenticity, and leadership from their President on this matter of fundamental fairness and equality under the law.”

Freedom to Marry is the campaign to win marriage nationwide. We are pursuing our Roadmap to Victory by working to win the freedom to marry in more states, grow the national majority for marriage, and end federal marriage discrimination. We partner with individuals and organizations across the country to end the exclusion of same-sex couples from marriage and the protections, responsibilities, and commitment that marriage brings.
