Freedom to Marry Thanks Retiring Boston Mayor Tom Menino
Long-time mayor was “stalwart champion” in MA marriage victory

New York -- Today, long-time Boston Mayor Tom Menino—a champion for the freedom to marry and co-chair of Mayors for the Freedom to Marry---announced that he would not seek reelection to a sixth term.
Marc Solomon, Freedom to Marry’s National Campaign Director, worked closely with Mayor Menino when Solomon served as Executive Director of MassEquality. His statement is below:
“Boston Mayor Tom Menino has been a stalwart champion of the freedom to marry. At one of the movement’s most crucial moments, when gay couples were legally marrying for the first time in American history, Menino was a powerful voice of support for those couples and their families. He spared nothing to ensure that getting a marriage license was the dignified experience that befitted the occasion. And as our opponents worked to take away marriage for same-sex couples in Massachusetts, Menino was relentless in making the case that the freedom to marry was good for all Boston families. We thank him for his tireless leadership and look forward to working closely with him in the days ahead to share how the freedom to marry has been a great positive for Boston’s economy and quality of life."
Freedom to Marry is the campaign to win marriage nationwide. We are pursuing our Roadmap to Victory by working to win the freedom to marry in more states, grow the national majority for marriage, and end federal marriage discrimination. We partner with individuals and organizations across the country to end the exclusion of same-sex couples from marriage and the protections, responsibilities, and commitment that marriage brings.
