NEW YORK, N.Y. — Freedom to Marry, the campaign to win marriage nationwide, is excited to welcome Nicole Collins Bronzan as its new Communications Director this week.

Nicole joins Freedom to Marry after two and a half years as Communications Director at the Legal Action Centera New York-based national social justice policy advocacy and direct service organization. Before that she spent six and a half years at The New York Times, where she climbed the ranks from Copy Editor to Deputy Copy Desk Chief and Assistant Metro Editor. She began her career at The St. Petersburg Times (now The Tampa Bay Times).

Leaving news for advocacy was a natural move for Nicole, who prized journalism’s pursuit of truth but longed to join the fight for a worthy cause. In the campaign for the freedom to marry, she says, she has found that and more.

“I call myself a recovering journalist because I never stopped thinking like a news editor,” Nicole said. “The difference is that now those instincts are my arms in this crucial civil rights battle. I don’t believe that the freedom to marry is a ‘gay issue’ – it’s something that affects us all, something that every American should see as fundamental to our core values.”

“As Freedom to Marry enlists a diverse set of champions to make the case for why marriage matters – Mayors for the Freedom to Marry, Young Conservatives for the Freedom to Marry, Latino family members in Familia es Familia, and even President Obama – we are delighted to have talented and passionate non-gay people like Nicole stepping up to be part of the campaign to win marriage nationwide,” said Evan Wolfson, Founder and President of Freedom to Marry.  “Nicole brings her journalistic savvy and contacts, her skills as a communications pro, and her own voice and story to our engagement with the American people that is opening hearts and changing minds, and growing and mobilizing the majority for marriage.”

When not glued to her computer, Nicole is a singer-songwriter, casual runner and general outdoor enthusiast. She and her husband and son live in New Jersey, where green lawns and quiet nights (mostly) make up for the much-missed hallmarks of Brooklyn.

Freedom to Marry is the campaign to win marriage nationwide. We are pursuing our Roadmap to Victory by working to win the freedom to marry in more states, grow the national majority for marriage, and end federal marriage discrimination. We partner with individuals and organizations across the country to end the exclusion of same-sex couples from marriage and the protections, responsibilities, and commitment that marriage brings.
