Portland, ME – Following Mainers United for Marriage’s official launch of the “Yes on 1” campaign on Monday and the release of a new statewide ad today, Freedom to Marry announced a pledge to match donations to the Maine ballot campaign through the end of the month of up to $200,000, which would bring Freedom to Marry’s investment in Maine to $1 million this year.
“Freedom to Marry could not be more proud to be such an active part of the campaign to win the freedom to marry in Maine this November,” said Marc Solomon, national campaign director of Freedom to Marry. “We are entering the final stretch, and if supporters step up with the resources required to finish the job, I am confident we will prevail,” added Solomon, who also serves on the Maine campaign’s executive committee.
The new ad, which will run through next week, urges viewers to vote yes on a Nov. 6 ballot initiative that would end discrimination against same-sex couples seeking a marriage license and protect religious freedom. It features Pastor Michael Gray, of Old Orchard Beach United Methodist Church, who is the lead signer on the citizen’s initiative petition in support of the freedom to marry. Pastor Gray’s church is also a member of Mainers United for Marriage.
"With the launch of ‘Yes on 1,’ there's no better time for this incredibly generous match offer. Freedom to Marry has always been a lifeline for our campaign, and this latest, critical infusion will help put us over the top to win at the ballot in November,” said Matt McTighe, campaign manager of Mainers United for Marriage. “Between conversations generated by ‘Yes on 1’ and the powerful message from Pastor Gray in this new ad, we’re confident that Mainers will vote on the side of love and commitment for same-sex couples on Election Day.”
Freedom to Marry has now invested more than $3 million dollars in this November’s marriage ballot campaigns, and plays a leadership role in the campaigns to win at the ballot in Maine, Minnesota and Washington. In addition to funding, support includes serving on governance committees and messaging, new media and field assistance. Freedom to Marry is raising additional funds for the ballot fights through its National Engagement Parties, which will take place around the country on October 13. It is also co-leading the United for Marriage effort to enlist volunteers to take time off and go to work on one of the four ballot measure campaigns this November.
A July poll by the Portland Press Herald shows that 57% of Maine’s registered voters support same-sex couples’ freedom to marry.
Freedom to Marry is the campaign to win marriage nationwide. We are pursuing our Roadmap to Victory by working to win the freedom to marry in more states, grow the national majority for marriage, and end federal marriage discrimination. We partner with individuals and organizations across the country to end the exclusion of same-sex couples from marriage and the protections, responsibilities, and commitment that marriage brings.
