Indianapolis – Following the launch of Freedom Indiana at a press conference yesterday afternoon, Young Conservatives for the Freedom to Marry applauded the local efforts of conservative leaders in the new campaign to defeat the proposed anti-gay amendment in the state.“The strong showing of support by conservative leaders in Indiana to defeat the harmful anti-gay amendment illustrates the irreversible shift has taken place in conservative circles across the country,” said Tyler Deaton, campaign manager of Young Conservatives for the Freedom to Marry. “As the Republican Party paves the way to being more inclusive as America evolves, the understanding of why marriage matters to same-sex couples and their families is pivotal to its growth. The freedom to marry is consistent with the conservative tenets of freedom, family, and personal responsibility, and it’s a value that Republicans are right to support.”
"We want Indiana to be welcoming and inclusive for all people," said Shannon Heider, Director of State Government Relations at Cummins Inc., a leader of Young Conservatives for the Freedom to Marry, and an Indiana resident who served as Deputy Legislative Director to former Indiana Governor Mitchell E. Daniels Jr. "HJR6 and other efforts to restrict the rights of people may also hurt the state's ability to attract and retain talented individuals and companies who need a diverse workforce. Indiana conservatives and Freedom Indiana are illustrating the shift we see on the national scale -- conservatives know that the freedom to marry, respecting individual liberties and celebrating our diversity is the right thing to do and the right way to make Indiana the best state it can be."###
Young Conservatives for the Freedom to Marry is a campaign to highlight and build support for the freedom to marry among young conservatives across America. They represent the rapidly growing numbers of young conservatives across the country that agree all Americans should be able to share in the freedom to marry.
