STARS LEND SUPPORT IN FAVOR OF MARRIAGE EQUALITY FEATURING SANDRA BERNHARD, MARGARET CHO, ALAN CUMMING, JOHN CAMERON MITCHELL, AND A ROCK STAR LINE-UP
"Until we are all equal, none of us are equal. All we wish to do is love, and that is all." - Margaret Cho
NEW YORK, NY – A live recording of the one-night-only benefit concert WEDrock, held in New York City on April 28, 2004, will be released on CD by Centaur Entertainment on May 2, 2006. The album features a star-studded line-up of musicians and entertainers all lending support in favor of equal marriage rights for same-sex couples. Proceeds from the WEDrock album will support Freedom to Marry, the gay and non-gay partnership working to win marriage equality nationwide.
Men-about-downtown Josh Wood and John Cameron Mitchell (Hedwig and the Angry Inch) produced the rockin’ concert of music, comedy and mayhem, with the goal of raising the roof and consciousness on the hot-button topic of proposed federal and state constitutional amendments to write discrimination into marriage law.
"I think it's important for artists to speak out against discrimination and add our voices in favor of equality for all," says John Cameron Mitchell. And featured artist Bob Mould says, "The fact that the right is making a gigantic moral issue of gay marriage should outrage most Americans. If you take the religious argument out of the picture, you eliminate a lot of the rhetoric that the Right base their arguments on."
Included in the WEDrock live recording are the wildly and wonderful acerbic Sandra Bernhard, the side-splitting, funny-lady herself Margaret Cho, the talented, glam-sensation John Cameron Mitchell, the powerful indie rock sounds of Le Tigre and Sleater-Kinney, Bob Mould of Husker Du and Sugar, and the Tony Award winning actor Alan Cumming. The legendary Lou Reed also makes a guest appearance, delivering a spoken-word version of his classic hit “Walk On The Wild Side.”
The proceeds from the album will go to support Freedom to Marry’s activities nationwide. Headed by Evan Wolfson, one of America's leading civil rights advocates and lawyers, Freedom to Marry brings new resources and a renewed context of urgency and opportunity to this social justice movement.
