Hospital Visitation Rights for Gay, Lesbian Partners Take Effect

On Jan. 18, 2011, new federal regulations went into effect requiring hospitals participating in Medicaid and Medicare (health insurance available to people 65 and over). The regulations allow patients to decide visitation rights, as well as who to entrust to make medical decisions, regardless of sexual and gender identity. However, this is no substitute for the full measure of protections and benefits of marriage. [Link]
