One year after introduction, DOMA repeal bill keeps gaining new cosponsors

It's been one year since the Respect for Marriage Act, the bill that would overturn the so-called Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), was introduced in Congress and 365 days later, support for ending federal marriage discrimination is at an all-time high. Just this week Representatives Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR), Hansen Clarke (D-MI) and Steve Cohen (D-TN) became the latest members of Congress to sign on as cosponsors of the bill.

With the addition of Rep. Jim Langevin (D-RI) and Rep. Tim Walz (D-RI) as cosponsors to the Respect for Marriage Act, the bill to repeal DOMA has a record number of cosponsors in the House.

NY Congressman Jerrold Nadler hails federal court ruling against DOMA

On Thursday, Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), chair of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, and sponsor of House legislation to fully repeal the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), cheered the federal circuit court decision striking down Section 3 of DOMA, which defines marriage as a union between one man and one woman for the purposes of federal law.
Nadler, the author of the Respect for Marriage Act, which would repeal DOMA, renewed his call for the immediate passage of his legislation.
