Freedom to Marry and Servicemembers Legal Defense Network have teamed up this week to launch a new, national persuasion campaign - Freedom to Serve, Freedom to Marry. The campaign will illustrate how the Defense of Marriage Act negatively impacts military families.

The city of Cambridge has decided to pay a stipend to public employees with same-sex spouse to cover the additional tax such employees are saddled with if they cover their spouse under their employer-provided health insurance. Cambridge is the first municipality in the country to attempt to offset this additional, unjust tax placed on same-sex couples because of the so-called Defense of Marriage Act.

Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT), Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, announced today the Committee will hold the first congressional hearing on repealing the so-called Defense of Marriage Act in the “coming weeks.”
