Wyoming and nine other states have filed an anti-gay amicus brief in the Prop 8 appeal case saying the Constitution does not require marriage to include same-sex couples and that states, not federal courts, have final say in whether to honor the freedom to marry.

When D.C. Councilmember and Georgetown alum David Catania (I-At Large, SFS ‘90, LAW ‘94) gave a speech at Georgetown in March of last year, he talked about marriage equality as an “undying civil rights” issue that he hoped to make progress on. What a difference a year makes: Yesterday, Catania was back on campus, discussing the successful freedom to marry legalization bill he sponsored and the role race and religion played in the fight for marriage equality in the District.

Delegate David Englin, D-Alexandria, wants Virginia to repeal its constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriages. He says the amendment, which voters approved four years ago, is unfair to gay and lesbian couples. “If we are to take our founding values seriously, where we say that every human being deserves equal treatment under the law, then we cannot enshrine in the Constitution a policy that boils down to nothing but bigotry,” Englin said. The Virginia based paper writes, "The District of Columbia City Council has voted to allow same-sex marriage in the nation's capital, and the mayor has signed the law. Now it goes to Congress where lawmakers have the authority to override it. They should refrain from doing so." (Link)

Virginia Gov. Timothy M. Kaine has directed his staff to begin putting into effect a proposal that would allow domestic partners of gay and straight employees to be covered under the state's employee health plan. [Link]
