A Toast To The Newlyweds in California, And A Vow To Protect Their Marriages
June 16, 2008As the clock strikes 5pm on the west coast today, Phyllis Lyon and Del Martin will be married in San Francisco's City Hall. Together for more than half a century, Phyllis and Del are civil rights pioneers who have spent their lives together working for fairness and equality, and they will be the first same-sex couple to receive a marriage license from the state of California.
California is now the second state to provide fairness for all families, and as with all civil rights achievements, the freedom to marry in California must be protected. While we witness this historic moment, remember that the most important action to take is to talk to friends and family members, neighbors and coworkers, about why this moment is so important for families in California and across our country.
