Actress Kelly McGillis weds longtime girlfriend

"Actress Kelly McGillis and Melanie Leis, a sales executive, were joined in a civil union on Wednesday morning in Collingswood, N.J.  Judge Robert T. Zane III, the municipal presiding judge for Camden County, N.J., officiated at the Collingswood Municipal Court.

"Ms. McGillis, 53, starred in “Top Gun” (1986) and “Witness” (1985) and had a role in “The Accused” (1988). In recent years, Ms. McGillis, a Juilliard graduate, has appeared on stage, including the title role in the Roundabout Theater production of “Hedda Gabler” in 1994, and on television, including two 2008 episodes of “The L Word” on Showtime.

"Ms. Leis, 42, is a regional sales executive in Philadelphia with Independence Communications, which provides Muzak to businesses. She is a graduate of the Berklee College of Music.

"She and Ms. McGillis, whose two previous marriages ended in divorce, met in 2000, when Ms. Leis was a bartender at a restaurant in Key West, Fla., that Ms. McGillis owned with her second husband, Fred Tillman, with whom she has two daughters, Kelsey Lauren, 20, and Sonora Ashley, 17.

"Last year, Ms. McGillis announced she was a lesbian in an interview with SheWired.com.

"Discussing that interview, Ms. McGillis said this week, 'That was one of those moments when somebody asked me a question, my kids had gone from home, so I really didn’t have to protect anyone by skirting the question, and I just decided to be absolutely honest.'

"Her latest film is 'Stake Land,' a vampire film to be shown this week at the Toronto Film Festival."
