Ambassador Jim Hormel will match gifts to Freedom to Marry made before December 31

For more than 10 years, Freedom to Marry has focused with strategic determination on ending marriage discrimination. In that time, we’ve helped deliver victories in 35 states and grown public support to historic levels – all in furtherance of our strategy to deliver a Supreme Court triumph and win marriage nationwide.

Fifteen states continue to deny the respect and protections of marriage to same-sex couples, and it’s time for the Supreme Court to bring the country to national resolution without leaving any state or any family behind.

Former Ambassador Jim Hormel and his partner Michael Nguyen have agreed to match any contribution to Freedom to Marry, dollar-for-dollar, up to $100,000, before December 31st.

Jim Hormel has been a longtime champion for LGBT equality and generous movement philanthropist. He was there with support when we launched this ongoing global freedom to marry movement back in Hawaii during the 1990’s, and has invested in Freedom to Marry year after year, win after win. When he became the first openly gay U.S. ambassador in 1999, no state allowed same-sex couples to marry. Ambassador Hormel knows that while we’ve come a long way, now is no time to drop the ball.

As early as January, the Supreme Court could announce that it will hear one or more marriage cases in this current term. That could mean a decision as soon as June, so we have to do everything we can in the months ahead to sustain our momentum and show the justices they can and must do the right thing.
