Artist Spotlight: Newlywed Rufus Wainwright plays for the freedom to marry
October 22, 2012
In August, acclaimed singer/songwriter Rufus Wainwright married his long-time partner Jörn Weisbrodt in Montauk on Long Island. The couple, who have been together for five years, celebrated on a beautiful day in late August, exchanging vows in front of guests like Julianne Moore, Yoko Ono, and Alan Cumming.
Now, Rufus is working to ensure that all same-sex couples across the country can enjoy the freedom to marry as well. That's why he's taking the stage with fun., The National, They Might Be Giants, and an all-star roster of other musical acts for Freedom to Love Now!, a concert event in New York City that will benefit Freedom to Marry. MX Justin Vivian Bond, the artist and close friend who officiated Rufus' wedding, will also be performing at the concert. You can buy tickets to Freedom to Love Now! here.
Rufus Wainwright has been in the music business for over fifteen years. His self-titled debut launched him onto the music scene and highlighted him as one of the first and most popular openly gay musicians. The album won him a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Music Album.
Since then, he's only gone onto greater fame and success. On his most recent album, April 2012's Out of the Game, Rufus collaborated with legendary music producer Mark Ronson.
