Brazil extends pension benefits to surviving partners in same-sex couples

"The Brazilian government announced Friday that committed same-sex couples will now be eligible for the social security pension benefits currently offered to heterosexual married couples, the Associated Press reports.

"Surviving spouses of retirees will now be able to receive the pension payments once sent to their same-sex partner, the Social Security Ministry explained. ...

"Although the freedom to marry has yet to be legalized in the country, couples have had inheritance rights and the ability to add a partner to health insurance and retirement plans since 2000."
