California: State officials Seek resumption of freedom to marry

"Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Attorney General Jerry Brown filed motions on Friday calling for resumption of weddings for same-sex couples in the state. ... Judge Walker ruled the ban [on the freedom to marry] violates federal equal protections and due process laws. But he agreed to block marriages of same-sex couples from immediately resuming until he can consider arguments on whether to keep the ban in effect while its supporters take their appeal to the Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Resuming marriage equality “is consistent with California’s long history of treating all people and their relationships with equal dignity and respect,” Mr. Schwarzenegger said in his legal filing."
