Couple hopes civil union bill becomes Colorado law

"It's the one gift Leslie Herod and Katina Banks of Denver won't find under their Christmas tree, but it could come by way of the state legislature.

"State Senator Pat Steadman, D-Denver, plans to introduce a bill early next year to recognize civil unions in Colorado.

"'The sense of fairness associated with a civil union bill,' said Banks, 'the fact that people will be treated equally lessens the tension.'

"Herod and Banks have been together seven years. Their dog, Theodore, rounds out their family, a family they say deserves the same legal protections as any other.

"'We know we're being treated unfairly when it comes to things like health care insurance,' Banks said. 'So yes, on a day-to-day basis we are experiencing these inequalities.'

... "If lawmakers approve the bill, Colorado would become the fourth state to recognize civil unions.  Vermont, New Jersey and Illinois already recognize civil unions."
