Defense Appropriations Bill reinforces need for repeal of DOMA

Today, the House of Representatives passed the Department of Defense Appropriations Bill with amendments that reaffirmed the discriminatory “Defense of Marriage Act” (DOMA).  Below is a statement from Marc Solomon, Freedom to Marry's National Campaign Director:

“A majority of Americans support the freedom to marry and yet today the House of Representatives chose to play political games rather than heed the will of the people it represents.  The Defense Appropriations Bill as it stands irresponsibly restates the discriminatory so-called Defense of Marriage Act in a bill that's supposed to be about supporting our Armed Forces. These amendments deepen and entangle the military and federal government in discriminatory policies that harm families of service personnel and others.  We now call on the Senate to drop this discriminatory language and focus its work on protecting our Nation's defense and supporting our Armed Services.”
