Growing Support for Mayors for the Freedom to Marry

It has been an exciting few weeks for Mayors for the Freedom to Marry. Mayor Karyn Hippen from North Dakota became our 400th mayor to join the movement, as well as our first mayor from the state. In less than two weeks, Mayors for the Freedom to Marry has added 22 new mayors to the growing list. We are ended May with 422 mayors across 39 states plus the District of Columbia!
Shortly after Mayor Hippen joined, she got company in North Dakota from Mayor Kyle Dorion of Pembina. Mayors for the Freedom to Marry also found support in other small towns throughout the country, including support from Mayor Aaron Householter of Salina, Kansas, Mayor Patricia Wheeler of Stone Mountain, Georgia and Mayor Del Rae Williams of Moorhead, Minnesota.
We have also received a flood of new nominations in the past few weeks, adding roughly 30 names to our nominations list in the past month alone. Nominated mayors names have been submitted by their constituents, and now these mayors will be petitioned to join Mayors for the Freedom to Marry by those that support the freedom to marry, and want to see their mayor support the freedom to marry as well. It is a very exciting time in the fight for the marriage, and it is great to see people throughout the country urge their local mayors, no matter how big or small the town, to support the freedom to marry.
Mayors for the Freedom to Marry launched in 2012, and we are working to sign up in all 50 states. With this growing support, we will be able to achieve our goal sooner rather than later. Check out our interactive map where you to easily see current Mayors for the Freedom to Marry, and also allows visitors to urge their own mayors to join the movement. By spreading the word about Mayors for the Freedom to Marry we can keep this momentum going, and together, we will be able to reach our goal!
