Iowa Justices defend ruling on the freedom to marry

"Chief Justice Marsha Ternus and Justice David Baker told the editorial board at the Cedar Rapids Gazette that opponents misinterpret the Iowa Constitution in their arguments that the court was wrong in 2009 in striking down a state law that said marriage was between a man and a woman. Some opponents contend the court should have sent the matter back to the Legislature.

"Baker said the court would have overstepped its role if it told another branch of government to take up the issue."
