Ken Mehlman: Republicans should support marriage equality

"Republicanism is about giving people more personal freedoms, and marriage is one such freedom, says Ken Mehlman, the former head of the Republican National Committee. Therefore, Republicans should embrace the freedom to marry—at least ideologically. 'The party of Lincoln ought to encourage the community that is built when two people who love each other decide they’re going to spend their whole lives together.' But anyone with a cursory understanding of American politics knows this not to be the case. The current leaders of the Republican Party need to 'look in the mirror' and confront their conflicting ideologies, says Mehlman.
