July 20, 2011
UPDATE: The deadline to enter the lottery to marry in NYC on Sunday is noon today. Enter the lottery here.
Today, Mayor Bloomberg, Speaker Quinn and the New York City Clerk McSweeney announced that due to the high number of couples—both same-sex and opposite-sex—who have already registered online to get married on Sunday, July 24, New York City will conduct a public lottery for any couple wishing to get married this Sunday. It is clear now that not only will Sunday, July 24, be historic as the day the marriage bill goes into effect in the state of New York, but also for being the day when the highest number of couples will be married on a single day in New York City history!
“We are going to make history on Sunday, with the eyes of the nation once again turning to New York City,” says Mayor Bloomberg. “We’ve done our homework, and its clear that the number of couples who want to marry on Sunday is more than the City Clerk’s offices could possibly handle. And the last thing we want is for couples to wait on line for hours and hours, only to walk away upset on what was supposed to be the happiest days of their lives. The fairest way to determine who gets the chance to wed on Sunday and ensure everyone can properly plan for their own big day is through an even-handed lottery system. Nobody puts on big events like New York and we will be ready on Sunday for what will no doubt be an historic and unforgettable moment.”
The City Clerk’s offices in all five boroughs will be open to marry at total of 746 couples on Sunday, July 24 from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. In order to become one of these 746 couples that will be married on Sunday, couples need to register for the lottery at the City Clerk’s website or by calling 311. When registering couples will need to specific which City Clerk office they wish to be married in and contact information for each person. The lottery will be open from noon today to noon on Thursday, July 21st. The winning couples will be notified via email or phone on Friday, July 22nd by noon.
But for those couples who are not selected in the lottery, don’t worry. The City Clerks offices in each borough will be open for extended hours all of next week—8:30 am to 6:30 pm—to make sure those couples who are not selected Sunday can indeed having their very special day.
