Maryland Legislature passes the freedom to marry
February 23, 2012
On the heels of a successful 72-67 vote in the Assembly last week, today the Maryland State Senate passed HB 438, legislation that would extend marriage to gay and lesbian couples, on a vote of 25 to 22. The bill now makes its way to Governor Martin O'Malley who has vowed to sign it should it reach his desk.
Gay and lesbian couples made a powerful case to their lawmakers about why marriage matters to them and why the denial is so wrong. We congratulate those couples and their families for sharing their personal stories and changing hearts and minds!
