Today, Young Conservatives for the Freedom to Marry, a campaign to amplify and build support for the freedom to marry among young conservatives across the United States, announced that Meghan McCain, an MSNBC contributor, columnist for The Daily Beast, and daughter of U.S. Senator John McCain, will be joining the Leadership Committee for the campaign.
McCain has spent much of her life on the campaign trail, and throughout, she has served as an outspoken advocate for opening up the Republican Party on social issues and diversity. She is well known for her 2010 memoir, Dirty Sexy Politics, and has specifically focused her outreach on women's issues, the freedom to marry, and diversifying the GOP.
McCain said today in a statement:
I'm thrilled to join the Young Conservatives for the Freedom to Marry, who believe, as I do, that we don't have to choose between conservatism and marriage for all committed couples. I look forward to spreading the message that the tenets of family, personal freedom, and responsibility point the way toward a GOP that fully embraces the freedom to marry.
Public opinion polls consistently demonstrate that young Republicans, Libertarians, and others who identify as conservatives are increasingly favoring the freedom to marry for all couples. In May, a poll from The Washington Post and ABC Newsindicated that 46 percent of self-identified Republicans ages 18-44 support the freedom to marry, and the rate of increase accelerates every year.
Last year's Public Religion Research Institute Survey found that nearly half of Republican Millenials favor the freedom to marry, while 19 percent of Republican seniors and 31 percent of all Republicans said the same. Clearly, the next generation of conservatives is driving these tectonic shifts in their party. Their thoughtful voices and willingness to depart from the perspectives shared by their older party members should be applauded and supported.
Meghan McCain joins eight other outstanding voices on the Young Conservatives for the Freedom to Marry leadership committee. These include CNN political commentator Margaret Hoover, Comcast government affairs manager Madeline Koch, New Hampshire Republican for Freedom and Equality Executive Director Tyler Deaton, Sarah Longwell, Denzenhall Resources VP Nicole Neily, International Center for Law & Economics Director of Operation Will Rinehart, government relations professional Torrey Shearer, and Marine Corps veteran Craig Stowell.
