‘Moms for Freedom’ works to defeat anti-freedom amendment in Indiana

This week, Freedom Indiana launched a new campaign called 'Moms for Freedom' to harness the energy of mothers across the state who oppose restricting freedom in the state. The Freedom Indiana team has shared the story of five awesome mothers who oppose limiting the freedom to marry in Indiana.

Freedom Indiana is the state-wide coalition working to defeat a proposed constitutional amendment that would permanently ban any and all protections for same-sex couples and their families. The proposed amendment, HJR-6, would restrict same-sex couples from attaining any form of family status - marriage, civil union, domestic partnership, and any other formal respect for their relationships. This year Freedom Indiana has been working hard to make the case that Indiana lawmakers should not

One of the mothers included in this initial push of Moms for Freedom, Leah Jackman-Wheitner, explained why she opposes HJR-6. She said:

HJR-6 seeks to roll back progress and take away our citizens’ rights, that affects our economic base and it positions us poorly in the national perception. If you care about protecting your home’s value, then you should be focused on protecting the economic base of your state. Taking away rights is not a way to protect or improve Indiana’s economic base. HJR-6 is a message of intolerance. If Indiana passes this amendment, we are on the wrong side of history.

Freedom Indiana Campaign Manager Megan Robertson explained the importance of moms raising their voices in opposition to HJR-6. She said:

These five moms — and countless more parents who support our organization — put a personal face on consequences of permanently amending our Constitution to exclude certain Hoosiers. We know the amendment will harm our economy. We know it sends the wrong message. But we want to make sure people understand that the folks most hurt by this amendment are caring, loving Hoosiers whose lives and families will be negatively affected.
