New public education campaign launches to push for marriage in Ohio
September 09, 2013
Today, Why Marriage Matters Ohio, a public education campaign supporting the freedom to marry, launched to highlight and increase support for the freedom to marry in Ohio. The launch was announced this morning at three simultaneous kick-off events in Cincinnati, Cleveland, and Columbus, and included representation from each of the founding members of the campaign: the Equality Ohio Education Fund, Freedom to Marry, the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, and the American Civil Liberties Union Foundation of Ohio.
Freedom to Marry is proud to serve as a founding member of Why Marriage Matters Ohio as we continue following the Roadmap to Victory this year and pushing forward on the momentum from the victories at the Supreme Court in June.
Freedom to Marry founder and president Evan Wolfson celebrated the launch of Why Marriage Matters Ohio today. He said:
Why Marriage Matters Ohio aims to encourage neighbor-to-neighbor conversations across the state, inviting people to talk about their own individual journeys toward support of the freedom to marry and their values of respect for commitment and treating others as we’d all want to be treated. Personal stories are the best conversation starter – and conversation is the best way to help people understand that all loving and committed couples in Ohio, gay and non-gay alike, should be able to share in the freedom to marry and the security and meaning marriage brings.
Elyzabeth Holford of Equality Ohio spoke at the launch event in Columbus this morning. She said, "We are launching this campaign today because we know Ohioans respect and value fairness and human dignity."
Senator Sherrod Brown spoke about the importance of the campaign today in Cleveland. He said:
All Americans should able to marry the person they love, and they should be able celebrate that love in Ohio. Full rights should not vary by geographical lines. Why Marriage Matters Ohio will bring this issue of equal rights to the forefront.
