Portia DeGeneres, Traditional Wife To A Wife

"Portia de Rossi considers herself a wife to a wife. Some disagree–including the federal government, which does not honor marriages of same-sex couples–but five states [and the District of Columbia] do agree, as well as one Los Angeles Superior Court commissioner. Yesterday the actress, who married talk show host and former American Idol judge Ellen DeGeneres in 2008, officially became Portia Lee James DeGeneres.

“'I am thrilled to legally adopt my wife’s name,' she said in a statement. 'I will continue to use Portia de Rossi for professional purposes.'

Ellen tweeted about the name change: 'I just got some amazing news. The court has granted Portia’s name change. She’s now officially Portia Winfrey.'

... "Ellen and Portia Degeneres are a reminder that the freedom to marry isn’t about shaking things up. It’s about settling down. 'Marriage is a different way of being together,' the former de Rossi once said. 'It’s legal, and it’s real, so there’s that kind of formality to it that makes it very valid.'
