Senator Mikulski: It’s time to repeal DOMA
Aug 16, 2011 at 03:33 pm
This blog post comes from Heather and Amy, a couple who lives with their daughter in Baltimore, MD. Although Heather and Amy legally married in DC last year, they are still denied over 1,000 federal protections because of the so-called Defense of Marriage Act. Heather and Amy are joining forces with Freedom to Marry, Equality Maryland, and Courage Campaign to call on their Senator Barbara Mikulski to cosponsor the Respect for Marriage Act, the bill that will overturn DOMA. Here's what they had to say in an email to Freedom to Marry supporters this afternoon:
Our wedding day last year was unforgettable -- standing in front of our family and friends, committing to build a life together and pledging to support one another through the good times and bad.
Since our daughter Anne was born, our legal vows are more critical to us than ever. Marriage says "we're a family" in a way that no other word can and more importantly, ensures that we have the tools we need to protect and provide for Anne.
But despite doing everything we can to legally protect our family, the federal government still treats us like strangers. The so-called Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) excludes legally married same-sex couples like us from more than a thousand federal responsibilities and protections, including Social Security and family and medical leave.
The Respect for Marriage Act has been introduced in the US Senate to repeal DOMA, but our US Senator Barbara Mikulski has yet to sign on as a co-sponsor.
Will you join us in asking Senator Mikulski to co-sponsor the Respect for Marriage Act?
As thousands of gay and lesbian couples across Maryland are doing the hard work of raising kids and building strong families, we shouldn't have to worry that DOMA will deny us the ability to protect Anne and our family when we need to most.
The majority of Marylanders support the freedom to marry, and now it's time for Senator Mikulski to take our voices to Washington to call for an end to this cruel and unjust law. She needs to hear from us now.
Ask Senator Mikulski to do what's right for Maryland families. Sign the open letter and Freedom to Marry, along with Equality Maryland and Courage Campaign, will personally deliver our signatures to her office.
Thanks for standing with us,
Heather and Amy
