Sons of Minnesota governor offer $200,000 challenge grant for MN United
June 07, 2012
This week, Minnesotans United for All Families, a coalition of organizations dedicated to defeating an anti-gay marriage amendment at the ballot in November, announced an exciting development that will work to advance the freedom to marry in the state. The sons of Minnesota governor Mark Dayton - Andrew and Eric Dayton - are pitching into Minnesotans United by offering a $200,000 challenge grant for the coalition.
Supporters of the freedom to marry are continuing to campaign hard in Minnesota, where anti-gay activists are pushing for the passage of a ballot initiative that would constitutionally ban marriage for same-sex couples.
The financial support from the Daytons means that Minnesotans United can do even more to capitalize on the pro-marriage momentum that the state is currently experiencing. Just this week, a poll out of Minnesota showed that only 43 percent of voters surveyed said they support the passage of the proposed anti-gay amendment. 49 percent of respondents said they were opposed to writing discrimination into their state constitution.
In a note for the Minnesotans United Facebook page, the Dayton brothers spoke out about why this campaign is important:
June 12 is an important date. It's Minnesotans United's reporting deadline - the next big test of this campaign. We need to use this opportunity to highlight the thousands of grassroots supporters all over Minnesota who are banding together in support of marriage equality. We hope you'll put your name on the donor list alongside ours.
The November election is our chance to show the rest of the country Minnesota's true character - all of us, coming together to stand with our friends, relatives and neighbors. We can make sure our state remains on the side of freedom - the freedom to choose the life you want to live.
