Time will solve marriage debate

A new Field Poll shows that a slight majority of California's registered voters favor gay marriage, but that edge disappears when voters are given the option of "civil unions."
Still, the poll shows a continued softening of the previous hard line against same-sex marriages. In 1977, nearly 60 percent of registered voters disapproved of same-sex marriage.
The poll comes as a federal judge is considering if Proposition 8, with which state voters narrowly banned gay marriage in 2008, violates constitutional equal rights protections.
