Tony Award-winning Freedom to Marry supporter Joan Stein passes away

Earlier today, Tony-awarding winning theatre producer Joan Stein passed away after a long battle with cancer. Stein was a longtime supporter of the freedom to marry, and in recent years, she worked hard to combine her commitment to the theatre with her advocacy for the LGBT community. 

Last fall, Joan partnered with Freedom to Marry when she and Richard Frankel produced Standing on Ceremony: The Gay Marriage Plays, an evening of heartfelt, funny, and reflective short plays that celebrated the love and commitment that all couples - including same-sex couples - share. The plays worked to raise awareness about why marriage matters and show theater-goers that same-sex couples want to marry for the same reasons that different-sex couples do. A portion of all ticket sales from Standing on Ceremony benefitted Freedom to Marry.   

Freedom to Marry thanks Joan for her dedication to winning the freedom to marry nationwide and remembers her for wonderful contributions to the stage and to society. She will be missed.
