United Federation of Teachers calls on NY Senate to pass marriage

The United Federation of Teachers is now part of a growing coalition of labor organizations calling on the New York legislature to pass a marriage bill this legislative session. UFT, which has over 200,000 members, joins numerous unions, including 32BJ, Communications Workers of America District 1, the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union, Teamsters Local 237, Affiliates of the New York City Central Labor Council, and 1199 SEIU.

New Yorkers United for Marriage- the coalition that Freedom to Marry helped create and co-leads- released this quote from UFT President Michael Mulgrew:

“Our union prides itself on a diverse membership and as a champion of equality we believe that it is time for all New Yorkers to be treated equally,” said Michael Mulgrew, President of United Federation of Teachers.  “This is a civil rights issue and we are calling on New York State’s Legislature to pass marriage equality legislation and give all New Yorkers the right to marry the person they love.”

With only three weeks left in the legislative session, New Yorkers United for Marriage needs your help to secure the freedom to marry this year. Click here to find out how you can get involved or sign up here to join us for a volunteer shift throughout the state.
