UPDATE: Russ Feingold supports freedom to marry plank
February 28, 2012
This morning, we were happy to announce that US Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), a co-chair of Barack Obama's reelection campaign, endorsed our "Democrats: Say I Do" campaign urging the Democratic Party to adopt a freedom to marry plank in the 2012 Party Platform. Following Senator Shaheen's announcement, a spokesperson for Russ Fiengold- the former Senator from Wisconsin-stated that Feingold has been a long supporter of marriage for same-sex couples and hopes that the Democratic Party will endorse the marriage plank. Like Shaheen, Fiengold is also a co-chair of Obama's reelection campaign.
Amanda Terkel broke the story at the Huffington Post earlier this afternoon:
Two of President Obama's national campaign co-chairs called on the Democratic Party to endorse marriage equality in its platform on Tuesday. The announcements are notable because Obama, who is also the head of the Democratic Party, still does not support same-sex marriage.
A spokesman for Russ Feingold told The Huffington Post that the former Wisconsin senator would like to see the Democratic Party's platform embrace equality, pointing to his long-time support of same-sex marriage rights.
With Shaheen, Fiengold, House Leader Nancy Pelosi, chairs of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, the President of the Young Democrats of America, and over 24,000 Americans joining this campaign, one thing is clear: Democrats want the party to do the right thing and publicly support the freedom to marry for same-sex couples
This is only the beginning. Between now and the National Democratic Convention in September, Freedom to Marry will organize in communities around the country to mobilize elected officials, civic leaders, and everyday citizens in order to turn this campaign into a reality in the upcoming Party Platform.
