VIDEO: Kristen and Jenna stand up for the freedom to marry in Mississippi

This week, on Wednesday July 10, Kristen Welch and Jenna Lockwood took action with the Campaign for Southern Equality's WE DO campaign by applying for a marriage license at the Pearl River County Courthouse in Mississippi. Because same-sex couples in Mississippi do not have the freedom to marry, the county clerk in Poplarville, MS denied the marriage license.

The Campaign for Southern Equality chronicled the action in this moving video HERE:

The action was part of Stage 5 of the Campaign for Southern Equality's WE DO project. For several years, same-sex couples in southern states have been standing together and requesting marriage licenses, knowing that they will be denied. By provoking these denials, the couples demonstrate what marriage discrimination looks like when it is enforced. They show who is harmed by these anti-marriage laws. They show that couples and families can no longer stand to be denied a freedom as basic as the freedom to marry.

The new video takes an inside look into Kristen and Jenna's life together in Picayune, MS. Jenna serves in the U.S. Air Force reserve - and she said this plays an important role when she stands up for equality in her home state. She said, "They see when I go in there and tell them that's my occupation - they see I fight for their right to deny me rights. That's something I feel is always important."
