Voice for Equality: Rep. Tyrone Yates

Tyrone K. Yates is a Democratic member of the Ohio House of Representatives, representing the 33rd District since 2003. Yates was a member of the Cincinnati City Council from 1990 to 1999 and served as Vice-Mayor of Cincinnati for two terms. Representative Yates is a former Senior Warden of St. Andrews Episcopal Church, a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc, The Argus Club, UC honorary Sigma Sigma, and is a Life member of the Navy League of the United States, the National Association For The Advancement Of Colored People (NAACP), the American Angus (cattle) Association and an Life Interim Member of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History. In 2008, Yates served as Chairman of the Local Host Blue Ribbon Committee for the NAACP National Convention, and he was Elections Chairman for the Ohio State Conference of the NAACP in 2008. In November of 2009, Representative Yates introduced a resolution in the Ohio House calling for a state vote May 4, 2010 to repeal the state's ban on marriage equality which was passed in 2004. Yates, who admitted the resolution was a long-shot for passage, said:

The profile on this issue is rising once again in Ohio. The nation does seem to be at a different place on domestic partner benefits and civil unions. It's causing us economic and social harm in our ability to attract and keep people here. [Link]
