Now the bill moves to the Senate where advocates are working hard to gain majority support. (Link)

May 12, 2009
Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith released a statement reiterating both his personal support for the governor's program bill and his intention to continue working to get the 32 votes necessary to pass it in his chamber.
"The momentum is shifting- marriage equality will be a reality in New York and I welcome that day," Smith said. "Today, it will be passed by the Assembly, and I congratulate Speaker Silver, Assemblyman O’Donnell and their colleagues for a noteworthy achievement.
It is my goal to realize that same accomplishment in the Senate and as a strong supporter of marriage equality legislation, I will continue to work until we have sufficient votes to pass it.
Marriage equality is about equal rights and basic personal freedom that no person should ever be denied. I remain steadfast in my commitment to protecting those rights and ensuring that all New Yorkers can enjoy a privilege which is fundamentally theirs." (Link)

The New York State Assembly passed a bill tonight that would extend marriage to same-sex couples by a 89-52 vote. Assemblymember Teresa Sayward [R-Willsboro] was among the roughly half a dozen Republicans who voted in favor of the bill. She evoked her gay son as she cast her vote.
"The word marriage symbolizes love, commitment and family and why should my son and other sons and daughters around the state of New York [not] have the same opportunity to experience that same commitment, love and family that other heterosexual couples do," Sayward said. "It’s time for us to not only reach in our hearts, but to do what we as elected officials in America have done all along and say we will not accept anything but equal rights."(Link)

The State Assembly approved legislation on Tuesday night that would make New York the sixth state to have the freedom to marry — a pivotal vote that shifts the debate to the State Senate, where gay rights advocates and conservative groups alike are redoubling their efforts.
In a sign of how opinion in Albany has shifted on the issue, several members of the Assembly who voted against the measure in 2007 voted in favor of it on Tuesday. The final vote was 89 to 52, including the backing of five Republicans. (Link)
Assemblyman Makes Gay Marriage Bill Personal

May 11, 2009
With the Legislature set to take up the bill to legalize marriage for gay couples on Tuesday, Mr. O’Donnell, the openly gay older brother of the comedian Rosie O’Donnell, has emerged as a tenacious, ingratiating, playful and sometimes prickly leader of the effort to pass the legislation. He has helped gather nearly 90 votes in the 150-member Assembly, which is expected to easily pass the bill. But he is also using the Assembly vote as a way to pressure members of the Senate, where the legislation’s fate will be decided, and demonstrate to wary senators that there is support in their districts for the bill.
