American Academy of Pediatrics supports the freedom to marry
March 21, 2013
This morning, the American Academy of Pediatrics, one of the nation's leading pediatrics groups, announced strong support for the freedom to marry for same-sex couples - as well as support for full adoption and foster care protections for gay and lesbian parents. The organization explained that marriage for same-sex couples is the best way to guarantee protections and security for these children.
Their statement, "Promoting the Well-Being of Children Whose Parents Are Gay or Lesbian," makes the case that in order to properly advocate for all children, the group's embrace of the freedom to marry is a natural next step in its mission to support children and their families. One section reads: "The AAP supports pediatricions advocating for public policies that help all children and their parents, regardless of sexual orientation, build and mantain strong, stable and healthy families that are able to meet the needs of their children.
"If a child has two loving and capable parents who choose to create a permanent bond, it's in the best interest of their children that legal institutions allow them to do so," Ellen Perrin, a co-author of the AAP's policy statement, explained today in a press release.
Benjamin Siegel, who also co-authored the policy statement, elaborated:
Children thrive in families that are stable and that provide permanent security, and the way we do that is through marriage. The AAP believes there should be equal opportunity for every couple to access the economic stability and federal supports provided to married couples to raise children.
The AAP's strong stance adds to dozens of other organizations who have said they favor the freedom to marry. Every reputable professional organization in the United States that has taken a public position on marriage supports extending the freedom to marry to same-sex couples. The consensus is clear in professional scientific, medical, and social science communities: ending the exclusion of same-sex couples from marriage promotes healthy, stable, and committed relationships.
