Phone banking for marriage in NYC

By Jamie Thilman, Freedom to Marry's Communications Intern

As a part of New Yorkers United for Marriage, Freedom to Marry is busy organizing phonebanks in partnership with Human Rights Campaign, Marriage Equality New York, Log Cabin Republicans, Empire State Pride Agenda, and others, including Broadway Impact, in an effort to make marriage a reality for all New Yorkers.

State legislators need to hear from their constituents, who overwhelmingly support the freedom to  marry, that now is the time to end marriage discrimination. The bi-weekly phonebanks have been a huge success, hosting more than 40 volunteers nightly. On May 5th, Chelsea Clinton lent her voice to the campaign in an effort to reach out to thousands of New Yorkers in all districts to urge their legislators to support the freedom to marry. That same day, her father, President Bill Clinton, voiced his support. Chelsea expressed her gratitude that he has given her "yet another reason to be proud."

Phonebanks take place throughout May on Monday and Thursday evenings at SEIU Headquarters in Midtown Manhattan. And you never know who is going to show up! Other influential New Yorkers volunteering their time include NYC Public Advocate Bill de Blasio and stars of the Broadway hits "Book of Mormon," "How to Succeed," "Mamma Mia," "Title of Show," "Priscilla Queen of the Desert," and more!

If you're in the New York area and would like to lend your voice, volunteer with New Yorkers United for Marriage.
