Senator Casey, we aren’t strangers
Oct 04, 2011 at 10:38 am
This blog post comes from David and David, a couple who lives in Central Pennsylvania, who have been together for 40 years. David and David legally married in 2008, but they are still denied over 1,000 federal protections because of the so-called Defense of Marriage Act. They're joining with Freedom to Marry, Equality Pennsylvania, and Courage Campaign to call on their Senator Robert Casey to cosponsor the Respect for Marriage Act, the bill that will overturn DOMA. The letter to Senator Casey is a continuation of our aggressive federal campaign that has successfully secured Senator Barbara Mikulski's cosponsorship and mobilized over 1,000 Rhode Islanders to contact Senator Jack Reed.
Check out what David and David had to say in an email to Freedom to Marry supporters in Pennsylvania this morning, and if you live in Pennsylvania, sign the letter and we'll personally deliver your signatures to the Senator's office.
We met 40 years ago while attending an opera in New York, and since that moment, we’ve been inseparable.
In that time, we’ve built a life together, supported one another, and established a home here in central Pennsylvania. In 2008, 38 years after we met, we traveled to California and were legally married in front of 30 of our closest family and friends. After decades together, we were finally able to say in front of friends and family: we are a family.
But the so-called Defense of Marriage Act says we’re legal strangers after 40 years together. DOMA excludes legally married same-sex couples like us from over 1,000 legal protections and responsibilities like Social Security and family and medical leave.
It’s time for the government to stop treating married couples as strangers. That’s why we’re joining Freedom to Marry, Equality Pennsylvania, and Courage Campaign in calling on Senator Casey to co-sponsor the Respect for Marriage Act, the bill that would repeal DOMA.
As thousands of same-sex couples like us across Pennsylvania are doing the hard work of building strong families, we shouldn't have to worry that DOMA will deny us the ability to protect the ones we love.
Join us today in signing the letter calling on Senator Casey to support the Respect for Marriage Act. Once you sign, Freedom to Marry, Equality Pennsylvania, and Courage Campaign will personally deliver the letter with our signatures to his office.
Thanks for helping us get one step closer,
David and David
