FEDERAL UPDATE: 3 new cosponsors of DOMA repeal
Oct 14, 2011 at 09:22 am
Good news to end the week on- we have 3 new cosponsors of the Respect for Marriage Act! In the past week Rep Lloyd Doggett (D-TX), Rep Bobby Rush (D-IL), and Rep Rick Larsen (D-WA) signed on as cosponsors of the bill that will overturn the so-called Defense of Marriage Act, bringing the total number of cosponsors to a record-breaking 128 in the House. Their support of this crucial bill comes at an exciting time for marriage in the nation's capitol. Since the bill's introduction earlier this year, the number of cosponsors has grown by 20 in the House and 12 in the Senate, and just two weeks ago Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (D-FL) became the first Republican cosponsor.
For most of this year, our field and digital engagement teams have partnered with local and state allies across the country to grow support for the Respect for Marriage Act, and we are proud to have joined with our state partners at Equality Illinois to secure another cosponsor. We're currently working with over 20 partner organizations to add new cosponsors by generating constituent contact and amplifying personal stories of same-sex couples who are harmed by DOMA. Following our successful campaign calling on Senator Mikulski to sign on, we've launched similar campaigns in Rhode Island and Pennsylvania.
But the work we do would mean nothing without the dedication of Freedom to Marry members around the country- you've called your members of Congress, shared your personal stories, and even met face-to-face with lawmakers. Together, we're making the case for ending federal marriage discrimination.
Contact your member of Congress now and ask them to cosponsor the Respect for Marriage Act.
