This weekend was an important weekend in the movement to win the freedom to marry for same-sex couples in the United Kingdom. Prime Minister David Cameron reiterated his support for ending the exclusion of same-sex couples from marriage, and 19 conservative leaders formed a new Freedom to Marry coalition.

On Friday, the Supreme Court of the United States announced that it will be hearing two cases related to the freedom to marry in 2013. The Court remained silent on four other marriage lawsuits - all challenges to DOMA - that faced potential review.

Yesterday, December 9, was the first day that same-sex couples in Washington could marry and have those marriages respected by the state. Freedom to Marry supporter Victoria Shaffer was on hand to photograph the big day on Sunday, and she shared her photos with us!

Last week, Evan Wolfson visited Hawaii to meet with local marriage advocates about the importance of winning marriage in the state. While in Hawaii, Evan spoke to advocates about how the state could go the extra mile in 2013 by asking the legislature to move marriage forward in the state.

Moments ago, the Supreme Court announced in an order that it has decided to hear the Proposition 8 case and a challenge to the so-called Defense of Marriage Act - Windsor v. United States - in 2013. Now, it is more urgent than ever that we make the same strong case for the freedom to marry in the court of public opinion that our advocates are making in the courts of law.

Yesterday, December 6, was the first day that same-sex couples in Washington state could be issued marriage licenses. Throughout the day, nearly 800 same-sex couples passed through court houses in counties across the state to request their marriage license. The first weddings between same-sex couples in the state will be held on Sunday, December 9.

This morning, Governor Martin O'Malley signed the necessary documents that will allow same-sex couples in Maryland to begin applying for marriage licenses. The marriage licenses will take effect beginning January 1, 2013.

This weekend, Penelope Gnesin and Brenda Sue Fulton became the first same-sex couple to marry at Cadet Chapel, a landmark chapel at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Fulton is a graduate from West Point, and she and Gnesin have been together for seventeen years.
